Memory is 14 years-old. Her parents separated when she was 12, her mother left her in her father’s custody before the father left her alone at a house they were renting. That is when life became even tougher for Memory. She stopped going to school, she was in Grade 6 and could not proceed to Grade 7. She would move from house to house looking for work to do to get food. At night she would go to a shack in an open area in Epworth to sleep. This went on for close to a year before she decided to look for her mother’s old friend who lived on the other side of Epworth. She had no address all she knew was her name, Mai Collen. She moved from door to door looking for her until one day she found herself at Mai Colen’s “house”. Her mother’s friend is also living in extreme poverty but she took her in and they are now living together. Memory, however, still has to go to the nearby Hatfield suburb every day to look for pice jobs so that they can get food.
Memory wants to go back to school, she needs clothes, food, and proper shelter.
“I took her in because I felt that she was not safe staying alone in an area where there were a lot of men. Memory still wants to go back to school my heart aches when I see the way she looks at other children who go to school and when I see her reading books, it tears me apart knowing that I cannot afford to send her back to school. She also has a problem with her eyes but we can not afford to have them checked,” said Mai Collen.
