Nomsa is a 15-year-old girl. Her father died when she was one-year-old. Her mother left her with her grandmother around that time. Nomsa grew up living with her grandmother in Epworth. her mother only visited once since the time she left her as a baby. Her situation became worse when her grandmother died leaving her as the eldest of the three children the grandmother was looking after. The other two children are her aunt’s. The aunt stays in rural areas, she sends them mealie-meal at times but the food they have is not enough.

To raise money for school fees and food Nomsa goes to Hatfield to do piece jobs. They have taken in a tenant to occupy one of the rooms at the “house” their grandmother left behind to get money for food.

Nomsa is in Form 2, church members from her prayer group contributed to pay her first term fees before schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown and the movement restrictions that it came with have made it difficult for her to look for jobs to do, as a result, she survives from handouts from neighbours.

“When I grow up I want to be a businesswoman. My biggest challenges are school fees and food. I would appreciate if people can help me with these, that’s all I want right now,” said Nomsa.
