We think of ourselves as the beacons of brotherly love and we are committed to bear the brunt of that love. Volunteering to help a needy friend, a sick friend, victims of violence or lobbying for human rights among other things may put us on harm’s way but we are determined to go the distance. The tremendous drain on time and other resources that come with electing to be there for a friend can be so prohibitive. However, the Friendly Society has made a commitment to humanity, a commitment to both serve and save humankind thus we have the guts to shoulder the burdens and horrors of our sacrifice. The Ebola virus ravaged parts of Africa and would still be spreading even now were it not for Friendlies that dared, volunteered to put their lives on the line and went to the affected regions to help curb the scourge. This is why we say friends must be daring and must be prepared to get out of their comfort zones to help other friends in difficult times.
